Burden of disease analysis in human and animal health

Duration: 2023-2027

People involved: Giulia Savioli, Beat Thomann, Nicole Klopfenstein, Jasmin Widmer

Burden of disease (BoD) analysis involves quantifying the impact of diseases on a population's health, psychosocial wellbeing and the economy. Estimating BoD is important tool in public health and animal health policy-making, providing a means to prioritise diseases based on the severity of their impacts on whole populations. Within this project, different methods were applied to quantify disease burden in humans and animals. The veterinary case studies focussed on disease burden in Swiss pork production and on estimating costs for hypothetical African Swine Fever outbreaks in Switzerland. The human case studies focussed on quantifying and comparing the burden due to four foodborne illnesses in Switzerland (Campylobacteriosis, Listeriosis, non-typhoidal Salmonellosis and Enterohaemorrhagic E. coli infection).
