FitPig project: Reduction of antimicrobial usage in pig production
Contact Person: Gertraud Schüpbach
The FitPig project comprises three different research projects that all aim at the improvement of management, feeding and health of pigs, and thus contribute to a more sustainable pig production with a low antimicrobial usage. The VPHI, together with the Pig Health Service, has the lead in a project assessing the effectiveness of regular herd health management on antimicrobial usage. A number of 40 breeding and fattening herds, respectively, will be visited and investigated on a regular basis over the time period of one year, and will receive recommendations for the improvement of management, housing conditions and feeding. Animal health, performance and antimicrobial usage will be recorded before and after the period of regular herd health management and will be compared to a control group not receiving regular herd health management.
